Gudie (Good-ee), aka Sarjinder Kaur Sahota, was a devoted wife and loving mother. Gudie was my mom. She had a well-defined palate and a taste for good food. She enjoyed eating and, for the most part, cooking (for a demanding family). She dedicated her time to keeping the household moving on a limited budget. Often, we would host events and functions at our house, where she was known to provide culinary perfection of East-Indian cuisine. People frequently told her to open a restaurant. My mom and I dreamed about opening a business together, but the opportunity never arose.
In 2011, Gudie was diagnosed with breast cancer, which eventually metastasized to the brain. During chemotherapy, she would often ask for different foods to eat. It was hard to satisfy the craving of someone going through this sort of treatment because nothing tasted like it used to. Over time, watching my mother, who used to be so strong, deteriorate in front of me was heartbreaking. Someone who used to spend hours standing in the kitchen cooking for dozens, to be bed-ridden. Someone who used to talk so loudly her voice reverberated in the house, could not speak. Someone who enjoyed food so much was unable to eat. Gudie died on December 23, 2013.
Since her death, I’ve wanted to find a way to honour her memory, which is why I decided to open the business we would’ve opened together. I want to share her loving and giving spirit with you. I want to provide my baking with the same tasty quality and perfection Gudie portrayed in her cooking.
